A Classic Town & Country Suit by Davies & Sons - Med 40. Davies & Sons have been around since the beginning of the C19th: with a client list that includes: Lord Wellington - Winston Churchill - Duke of Edinburgh; to name but three..
This is a genuine, Savile Row-made, classic, Town & Country suit. T was made in the mid-late. 90s - to a classic/traditional pattern.I came by this suit by shear luck: I was passing their showroom, in Savile Row, in about 1999, and had gone in just to look at a tie. In the process, I got chatting to one of the senior tailors, who happened to be visiting the shop.
Once he learnt I was keen on traditional-vintage suits, he mentioned they happened to have a couple suits, sitting in the back.. ", and made to a standard 40 - which were, "no longer needed and just doing nothing... ", and he wondered whether, "they might be your kind of thing? He said they had been made a few years before, for PR purposes'... A couple of fashion shows - one or two tv presentations...
That sort of stuff: To help promote Savile Row skills to a wider public... I went on to respond by saying thanks, but they'd be way out of my price range...
Well, you might be surprised; for us they're just surplus, and not really suitable for any of our clients - who come for personal tailoring. I doubt very much if something like that would happen nowadays - different business practices and, a different generation.. I ended up taking both; and giving one to my brother & keeping this one.... He other was in a rather'too strong' Prince of Wales check - and a bit too'Jack-the-Lad-at-the-Races' for me.. So, perfect for my bro.And my brother continues to wear his for special occasions. I only mention the above as there's no labels on the suit - and, therefore, you're going to need to take my word for it (or not, your choice). My brother's did, in fact, have labels. Tho, I guess mine didn't really require them - as, I understand, labels generally only went on when items were due to be taken by the clients.. I think I only wore this suit once, then it got carefully stored, and'forgotten' - due to the distraction of too many others? And, as a result, it's in perfect, as-new condition - with absolutely no signs of wear or other defects. The heavy-gauge tweed is in a very nice dark & mid-grey herringbone, and a subtle, thin brown check. The weave is of a rather'softer', more contemporary feel than the'harder' tweeds of the 60s & earlier - which I guess many would now prefer. The jacket is 3 button, a slightly fitted cut, slanted hip pockets - with twin 8 vents, 4-buttoned cuffs. He lining is in a contrasting bronze silk.
The trousers are double-pleated, button-fly, with side-waist adjusters & brace buttons. Vertical side pockets, 2 rear flapped-pockets & a matching large ticket pocket on the front.
1.5" turn-ups & 8.5" wide cuffs. This is a 40+ Suit. For me, a medium 40 and 5ft-10, it's a good fit. However, please carefully check the measurements - and judge for yourself. Full Length (waist to cuff): 41.Inside Leg: 29 (a low rise). Total of 1.5 extra material in the hem. (& another 2 if you were to include the turn-up).
Always Check Measurements Against An Existing Garment of a Similar Kind. Dry cleaned & ready to wear. Ve acquired quite a lot of vintage clothing, including High Street Fashion, and household collectables, over the last 20 years. And are looking to slim things down, as we're intending to move in 2022. The vintage items were acquired, through some effort and expense; mostly from London markets and specialist fairs. And always selected carefully, with thought to condition, quality and whether it represented the best of the era - mostly early-mid 60s. As you may be aware, things of this quality are no longer easily provided by the the high street - even at the high-end. And the textiles are often no longer available. Nothing offered will be'tired' or worn-out - be it vintage or otherwise. And, as we know the disappointment of receiving things that are not as presented, we'll be making every effort to describe things fully and honestly - whilst giving any guidance on sizing we can.
