It was on this principle that Pierre Fournier launched the French brand ANATOMICA in 1994 to recreate traditional European clothing that had either already disappeared, or was in the process of disappearing, from the male wardrobe. A collaboration with Kinji Teramoto that began in 2008 sparked a new direction: the revival of American clothing made possible by Japanese production. In 1994, Pierre Fournier and Gilbert Nousse create the brand ANATOMICA, setting up shop at 14 rue du Bourg Tibourg in Pariss 4th arrondissement.

This boutique, still operating in its original location, is Pierres third, after GLOBE and HEMISPHERES, which were both based on his observations of traditional and innovative styles around the world. With ANATOMICA, Pierre ceases all external sourcing and production (as a result of sharp declines in quality due to offshoring and production simplification) and begins developing his own collections, made in France.

Inspired by the history of Western menswear and his studies of fit, his collections follow the natural anatomy and movements of the human body. These anatomical clothes carefully reproduce the characteristics of traditional work wear and military suits, jackets and pants. Beyond just retro, the brands spirit is one of a return to the simplicity of these original styles, putting form in service of function.

Its in his Paris boutique on rue du Bourg Tibourg that Pierre and Charles (son of Gilbert and new ANATOMICA business partner) meet Kinji Teramoto, a regular ANATOMICA customer, passionate collector of vintage American clothing and maker of prĂȘt-a-porter in Japan. During a 2008 visit, Pierre notices Kinjis blue jeans, whose pant legs are constructed entirely seamlessly using a single piece of fabric quite a remarkable piece of clothing.

Though ANATOMICA had, until that time, focused on European clothing and forgone the vintage American fad, Kinji persuades Pierre to return to his original hobbyhorse from 40 years prior. And thus begins a new direction for ANATOMICA with a line of American revival clothing co-designed by Kinji and Pierre: jeans, sportswear, sneakers, shirts and later traditional English rainwear, made possible by the excellent, specialized manufacturers that still exist in Japan. Pierre is one of the biggest influencers to the apparel industry of the world.

With the great interest in ORIGINAL that can only be created in a particular place or by a certain ethnic group, he has been introducing numerous genuine brands/articles to the industry. He opened GLOBE at Les Halles area of Paris in 1975. Displaying the genuine articles discovered by Pierre in all over the world in the unconventionally elegant manner created by the masterly dramatization, GLOBE quickly set the standard for what we now call selected shops. It was the first European shop to sell the signature jeans of the famous US brand, shrunk by the American laundry method. In 1979, he extended the concept of GLOBE and opened HEMISPHERE, connoting the northern hemisphere, in 16th district of Paris. It was the legendary shop which introduced American folklore brands to the world, which were not yet well known even in the US. The shop advanced to Japan as well. Unfortunately, he decided to close it after the untimely death of the co-founder in 1985. Later, he founded another concept shop to focus on the best-fitting cloths and shoes that embrace different physiques, ANATOMICA, in 1994. Now, he serves as the director of the ANATOMICA to drive the brand. Together with the designer, Kinji, he pursues the ANATOMICAL UTOPIA.
